Jovinus was proclaimed emperor at Mogontiacum (Mainz) in 411 with the backing of the Burgundians and Alans — barbarian federates whose support he could not have seized power without. His brother Sebastianus was elevated as co-emperor the following year, a move that alienated Honorius irrevocably and foreclosed any possibility of recognition from Ravenna. The regime collapsed when Ataulf and the Visigoths, initially allied with Jovinus, switched sides; both brothers were captured and executed in 413.
The SMLDV mintmark places this piece at Lyon's fourth officina.
