The VOTIS XXX MVLTIS XXXX vow legend commemorates the thirtieth and fortieth regnal anniversaries of Constantius II — the XXX marking vows fulfilled, the XXXX vows anticipated. Constantius reached his tricennalia in 353, making this issue datable with reasonable precision within the 351–355 window. The Nicomedia mint was among the most active eastern facilities of the period, strategically positioned in Bithynia and long favored by emperors operating against the Sassanid frontier.
Siliquae of this type are frequently found clipped, a consequence of their high silver content relative to contemporary bronze issues.
