Obverse description Central field occupied by the Shi'ite Kalima rendered in bold nasta'liq script, with the declaration of faith reading 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Ali is the Vicegerent of Allah.' The names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'a Islam radiate around the central legend in a circular arrangement, filling the field to the irregular flan edge. The overall composition is densely inscribed with no figural elements, consistent with Safavid religious numismatic convention. The script is deeply struck with characteristic hammered irregularity.
