The Untikesken — the Iberian people centered at Emporion (modern Empúries, on the Catalan coast) — minted bronze fractions alongside their silver coinage during the second century BC, a period when Roman military presence in Hispania was intensifying following the campaigns against Carthage. This sextans falls within that production window, issued by a community that had maintained unusually close commercial ties with Greek Massalia for generations before Rome's arrival changed the political calculus entirely.
