Petelia, a Bruttian town of Oscan origin, earned an outsized place in the history of the Second Punic War by holding out against Hannibal's forces for an extraordinary length of time — reportedly until the defenders were reduced to eating leather and grass. Rome eventually failed to relieve the siege, and the city fell around 216–215 BC. That this coinage was struck in the decades immediately following speaks to a recovery of civic function under difficult and shifting political conditions in southern Italy.
