Vespasian struck heavily in bronze during the early 70s AD as part of a deliberate effort to restore confidence in Roman coinage following the civil wars of 69 AD — the Year of the Four Emperors had left the mint system fractured and output erratic. Spes, the personification of hope, carried pointed political weight for a dynasty with no hereditary claim to power, only the legions and a demonstrated ability to end chaos.
RIC II.1 713 is a Rome mint issue from the middle years of Vespasian's reign, before the Flavian coinage fully standardized its types.
