Reverse description A detailed architectural rendering of the hexastyle Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill, depicted in frontal elevation. Six columns support an elaborately decorated pediment filled with sculptural figures in relief; statues of quadrigae are visible at the apex and corners of the roofline. Within the colonnade, a seated cult figure — Jupiter enthroned — is flanked by standing attendant figures, with an additional figure visible to the left of the portico. The temple rests on a stepped podium, and the senatorial abbreviation S·C appears in the exergue below.

Additional information

Vespasian struck heavily in bronze through the mid-70s to fund an aggressive building program that included the Colosseum, begun around 72 AD on the drained site of Nero's private lake. The SC inscription — Senatus Consulto — nominally indicated senatorial authorization for base-metal coinage, a constitutional fiction the Flavians maintained while exercising far tighter control over the mint than the formula implied.
