In her extended right hand she holds a small figure of Victory, a winged deity offering a wreath, emphasizing Rome's martial supremacy and Vespasian's legitimacy following the civil wars. The legend ROMA appears in the upper field, while the senatorial authorization mark S C (Senatus Consultum) is placed in the lower field to the left and right of the figure, flanking the exergual area. A dotted border frames the entire reverse design. The composition is bold and emblematic, characteristic of the large orichalcum sestertii struck at Rome under the Flavian dynasty. |
