| Obverse lettering | IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG P M T P P P COS III (Translation: Imperator Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, Pontifex Maximum, Tribunicia Potestate, Pater Patriae, Consul Tertium. Supreme commander (Imperator) Caesar Vespasian, emperor (Augustus), high priest, holder of tribunician power, father of the nation, consul for the third time.) |
| Reverse description | The personification of Libertas stands in full figure facing left, draped in a flowing stola and palla, extending her right hand forward to present a pileus (the freedman's cap, symbol of liberty) while holding a long vindicta (rod) upright in her left hand. The monumental senatorial abbreviation S C (Senatus Consultum) is prominently placed in the field to either side of the figure, flanking the goddess at mid-body level. The reverse legend LIBERTAS PVBLICA encircles the design along the rim, affirming the public freedom proclaimed by the new Flavian dynasty. The composition follows established Julio-Claudian iconographic conventions adapted to Flavian political messaging. |
