Issued in 71 AD to commemorate the Roman suppression of the Jewish revolt and the destruction of Jerusalem the previous year, the IVDAEA CAPTA series was one of the most sustained propaganda coin campaigns in Roman history, continuing under Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian for over two decades. Vespasian used the Jewish War's outcome to legitimize a dynasty with no ancestral claim to power — the Flavians needed a triumph, and this coin was part of broadcasting it.
RIC II.1 #163 is a sestertius struck at Rome. The war's spoils, including treasures from the Temple, directly funded construction of the Colosseum.
