Issued during the period bracketing Trajan's Dacian Wars — the first campaign concluded in 102, the second ending with Decebalus's suicide in 106 — this sestertius belongs to a sustained emission that funded and commemorated Rome's most profitable conquest in generations. The Dacian gold and silver extracted from Sarmizegetusa financed a building program unprecedented since Augustus, including the Forum and Column that still stand in Rome.
RIC II 551 falls within a large, carefully organized series attributed to the Rome mint under a production apparatus significantly tightened by modern scholarship, particularly following the Woytek revision of RIC II.
