Titus struck this issue in 80 AD — the year Vesuvius had already buried Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the same year the Colosseum opened and a devastating fire tore through Rome. The appeal to Vesta was not incidental. The Temple of Vesta in the Forum suffered badly in that fire, and the coinage of this period reflects a deliberate imperial effort to signal restoration and divine favor amid consecutive catastrophes.
