Titus struck PAX AVGVSTI sestertii in the immediate aftermath of two catastrophes: the eruption of Vesuvius in August 79 AD, which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum, and a fire that devastated Rome in 80 AD. The peace proclamation was less a military statement than a political one — Titus needed to project stability and divine favor while his administration scrambled to organize relief efforts across Campania.
He died in September 81, after just over two years as emperor, before the recovery was complete.
