背面描述 Domitian, as Caesar, depicted on horseback in full gallop to the left, wearing military dress and raising a long sceptre or spear in his right hand. The horse is shown with fore-legs raised, conveying dynamic martial energy. The senatorial authority mark S C (Senatus Consultum) appears in the lower field on either side of the horse's legs. The surrounding legend identifies Domitian by name and titles, running along the outer rim of the flan.

附加信息

This sestertius was struck under Vespasian to advertise dynastic continuity, naming both his sons — Titus already holding tribunician power, Domitian marked out as consul designate for the second time. The co-designation of Domitian on Vespasianic coinage is politically careful: prominent enough to secure the succession line, subordinate enough to leave no ambiguity about rank. Domitian would not receive his second consulship until 73 AD, meaning this issue dates to the window between designation and assumption of the office.
