| Popis rubu | The reverse depicts the Ara Romae et Augusti, the monumental altar of Rome and Augustus erected at Lugdunum, shown in frontal elevation. The altar is flanked on each side by a tall pillar or column, each surmounted by a Victory standing with wings spread. The altar structure itself is richly decorated with relief panels on its base, and the whole composition is presented in a detailed, architectural style characteristic of Lugdunum mint issues. The legend ROM ET AVG appears in the exergue below the altar, rendered in clear Latin capitals. This reverse type is a celebrated example of Augustan imperial propaganda celebrating the imperial cult in the provinces of Gaul. |
