Reverse description The reverse depicts the Ara Romae et Augusti, the monumental altar of Rome and Augustus erected at Lugdunum, shown in frontal elevation. The altar is flanked on each side by a tall pillar or column, each surmounted by a Victory standing with wings spread. The altar structure itself is richly decorated with relief panels on its base, and the whole composition is presented in a detailed, architectural style characteristic of Lugdunum mint issues. The legend ROM ET AVG appears in the exergue below the altar, rendered in clear Latin capitals. This reverse type is a celebrated example of Augustan imperial propaganda celebrating the imperial cult in the provinces of Gaul.
