| Obverse description | Enthroned figure of King Sauromates I seated facing right upon a curule chair, holding an upright sceptre surmounted by a royal portrait head. The king is depicted in regal attire appropriate to Bosporan dynastic iconography. The encircling Greek legend identifies the ruler by his full dynastic title. The composition reflects the Romanised court style characteristic of the Bosporan kingdom during the late first and early second century AD. |
