Nerva's reign lasted just 16 months, but his sestertii carry outsized historical weight. He was selected by the Senate within hours of Domitian's assassination in September 96 AD — an elderly, childless senator elevated specifically because he posed no dynastic threat. The Fortuna Augusta type belongs to his earliest emission, part of a calculated messaging campaign to distance the new regime from Domitian's increasingly autocratic rule.
RIC II 73 is among the more frequently encountered Nerva sestertii, though genuine worn examples still outnumber high-grade survivors considerably given the brevity of the reign.
