Nero's sestertii from this period are among the finest large bronzes Rome ever produced, a direct consequence of his personal investment in aesthetic reform following the death of Burrus in 62 AD and the removal of Seneca's moderating influence. The mint output shifted noticeably toward monumental scale and sharp, deeply modeled relief — partly propaganda, partly the emperor's genuine artistic ambition.
RIC 393 falls within the issues struck before the great fire of 64 AD reshuffled imperial priorities entirely.
