The reverse legend commemorates Nero's closing of the Temple of Janus — a ritual act performed only when Rome was at peace on all fronts, and one of the rarest gestures in Roman state religion. Nero carried it out in 66 AD following the settlement with Parthia over Armenia, brokered by Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo after years of grinding frontier warfare. Augustus had closed the gates twice; Nero's closure was only the fourth or fifth time in recorded Roman history the ceremony had been performed.
