| Obverse lettering | NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P (Translation: Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribunicia Potestas, Imperator, Pater Patriae Nero Claudius, Caesar, emperor (Augustus), victor over the Germans, high priest, tribunician power, supreme commander (Imperator), father of the country.) |
| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a military decursio scene in which Nero, bare-headed and cuirassed with his cloak billowing behind him, rides a prancing horse to the right, holding a spear at rest in his right hand. Immediately before him strides a foot soldier advancing to the right, head turned back to the left, bearing a vexillum (military standard) over his left shoulder in his right hand. Behind the emperor, a second helmeted soldier runs to the right, completing the processional military composition. The scene commemorates the ceremonial cavalry exercises performed before the emperor, a traditional display of Roman martial prowess. The type legend DECVRSIO appears in the exergue or field, identifying the military maneuver depicted. |
