The harbor basin is depicted with a schematic bird's-eye perspective, showing multiple ships moored within the breakwaters. A tall lighthouse (pharos) surmounted by a statue of Neptune dominates the upper portion of the design. In the exergue, the personification of the river Tiber reclines to the left, holding a rudder or reed, representing the waterway connecting Ostia to Rome. The legend AVGVSTI S PORT OST C, divided across the field, refers to the Augustan port of Ostia constructed under Claudius and celebrated by Nero, with S C denoting the senatorial authority for the bronze coinage. |
