Sestertius - Nero ANNONA AVGVSTI CERES S C, Annona and Ceres

Nero's grain coinage of the 60s AD was no accident of iconography. The Annona types appeared in the wake of serious supply disruptions to Rome, and Nero invested heavily in infrastructure at Ostia — Claudius had begun the harbor works, but Nero completed and expanded them — to secure the Egyptian and North African grain lifelines on which a city of roughly one million people depended. The political calculus was direct: control the grain supply, control public opinion.

Sestertii of this type were struck across several workshops simultaneously, and die links between RIC 496 specimens suggest high-volume production pressure consistent with a deliberate public-messaging campaign rather than routine coinage.
