| Beschrijving keerzijde | The river god Nilus reclines to the right upon a sphinx, his traditional attribute, holding a reed in his right hand and a cornucopia in his left, symbolising the fertility of Egypt. Multiple small children (cubits, or pygmies) are arranged around and upon the figure, each representing a cubit of the Nile's flood level. In the waters below, a crocodile and, on some specimens, a hippopotamus are depicted, either facing Nilus or ridden by one of the children. The exergual field carries the senatorial authorization mark S C flanked by double lines. |
