| Reverse description | The Egyptian deity Horus depicted standing facing, wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt (pschent), clad in a long draped garment. In his right hand he holds a tall sceptre (was-sceptre), while his left hand holds a further attribute at his side. The letters S and C (Senatus Consultum) are placed in the left and right fields respectively, flanking the divine figure. This reverse type reflects Hadrian's well-documented interest in Egyptian religion and his travels to Egypt in AD 130, and is among the rare series of Roman imperial coinage depicting native Egyptian deities in their canonical iconographic form. |
