The EXPED AVG reverse type — referring to an imperial expedition — is associated with Hadrian's unusually extensive personal travels, which were unlike almost any predecessor. Between 121 and 123 AD, he journeyed through Gaul, Britain, and the Rhine and Danube frontiers, inspecting troops and commissioning defensive works including the wall in northern Britain that bears his name. This sestertius was almost certainly struck to commemorate or accompany that first great tour, a deliberate departure from the sedentary court model of earlier emperors.
