| Obverse description | Bare-headed, bearded bust of Emperor Hadrian facing left, draped and cuirassed, depicted from the rear or side, with the paludamentum fastened at the shoulder and rendered in fine folds. The portrait displays Hadrian's characteristic short curly hair and full beard, executed in the refined Hellenistic-influenced style favoured during his reign. The encircling Latin legend reads HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS along the border, contained within a beaded inner rim. The high-relief effigy occupies the majority of the flan, demonstrating the accomplished die-cutting of the Rome mint workshops. |
