Obverse description Bare-headed, draped bust of Emperor Hadrian facing right, portrayed with his characteristic short beard and curled hair rendered in finely engraved parallel strands. The effigy displays the emperor's shoulders lightly draped, consistent with the Hadrianic portraiture style that introduced the bearded imperial image to Roman coinage. The circular legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS runs along the periphery, separated from the bust by a finely beaded inner border. The field is broad and relatively plain, emphasizing the bold, high-relief portrait that is characteristic of the Rome Mint's sestertius production of this period.
