| Reverse description | The emperor Hadrian is depicted on horseback advancing to the right, his right hand raised in the adlocutio gesture of address. Before him stand five soldiers in military dress, each bearing a standard or vexillum, acknowledging their commander. The scene commemorates Hadrian's celebrated tours of the provincial armies and reflects the EXERCITVS series of sestertii issued to honour individual legions and their provinces. The field carries the senatorial authority mark S C flanking the exergual area, and the legend EXERC SYRIAC appears in the field or exergue. |
