| Reverse description | Hadrian stands left on a low tribunal platform, his right hand raised in an adlocutio gesture addressing troops, while his left hand holds a long sceptre. Before him are three soldiers bearing legionary standards, with a lictor positioned between them facing the assembled men. The scene commemorates Hadrian's celebrated visit to the armies of Hispania, part of his extensive provincial tour, and exemplifies the adventus/exercitus coin types issued to honour specific Roman military units. The senatorial authorisation mark S C appears prominently in the lower field, flanking the reverse legend. The composition reflects the sophisticated narrative relief work characteristic of Hadrianic imperial coinage from the Rome mint. |
