The DISCIPLIN AVG reverse type belongs to a programmatic series Hadrian issued to celebrate the virtues of the Roman army, likely tied to his extensive provincial inspection tours of the late 120s and early 130s. Hadrian was famously hands-on with military discipline — he personally reviewed training standards, slept in the open with troops, and imposed strict regulations on camp life that earlier emperors had allowed to lapse. The coinage was propaganda in the most literal sense: a public statement that the emperor had personally seen to the army's fitness.
