Reverse description The emperor Hadrian is depicted on horseback, galloping to the left in a dynamic military pose, his right hand raised in the adlocutio gesture and his left hand gripping a spear. The horse is shown in full stride with forelegs raised, conveying vigorous imperial energy. The reverse type commemorates an imperial military expedition (expeditio Augusti). The large senatorial mark S C (Senatus Consultum) flanks the lower portion of the central design, and the legend EXPED AVG and COS III appear in the field and exergue, authorising the issue by decree of the Senate. The scene is rendered in bold relief appropriate to the large orichalcum sestertius format.
