Drusus received his second tribunician power in 22 AD — an unmistakable signal that Tiberius had designated him as successor. The following year he was dead, poisoned by Sejanus and his own wife Livilla, a conspiracy that went undetected for eight years until Sejanus's fall in 31 AD forced a confession. This sestertius belongs to that narrow window of official favor, struck while Drusus was still the presumptive heir to the Julio-Claudian succession.
RIC I #42 is among the more frequently encountered of the Drusus bronze issues, but the series as a whole was struck posthumously under Tiberius, likely as a memorial gesture after the poisoning came to light.
