This sestertius belongs to a tight issue commemorating Domitian's Germanic campaigns, specifically the Rhineland operations of 83–85 AD in which he personally led — or at least presided over — the war against the Chatti. The campaign was controversial from the start: Domitian celebrated a triumph that critics, including Tacitus, dismissed as theatrical, with captives and slaves dressed as Germans rather than genuine prisoners of war.
RIC II.1 468 is among the issues struck in the immediate aftermath, when the Rhine frontier was being reorganized into the formal provinces of Germania Superior and Germania Inferior.
