| Reverse description | Annona standing right, holding a cornucopiae in her left arm, faces the enthroned figure of Ceres seated to the left, who holds corn-ears and a lighted torch. A modius (grain measure) is set upon an altar in the lower field, and the prow of a ship appears behind, alluding to the maritime transport of Rome's grain supply. The legend ANNONA AVGVST is disposed around the upper field, with the senatorial authority mark S C prominently placed in the lower portion of the field. The composition is a canonical expression of imperial concern for the annona, the public grain dole. |
