Clodius Albinus held the title of Caesar under Septimius Severus from 193 AD — a deliberate political arrangement Severus used to neutralize a dangerous rival while consolidating power after the chaos of the Year of the Five Emperors. The CONCORDIA coinage issued under Albinus during this period was pointed propaganda, projecting an alliance both men knew was temporary. By 195, Severus had declared his dead son Caracalla the heir, effectively terminating Albinus's position and forcing the confrontation that ended at the Battle of Lugdunum in 197.
