The soldiers are helmeted and armed with shields and parazonia; the two rearmost pairs carry legionary aquilae (eagle standards). The composition captures a ceremonial military address scene with careful attention to the hierarchical distinction between the emperor and his troops. The reverse legend ADLOCVT COH appears in the field, commemorating Caligula's speech to the Praetorian cohorts upon his accession. |
