| Obverse description | Frontal facing crowned and bearded bust of Emperor Theophilos, wearing the loros, rendered in the distinctive Syracuse provincial style with schematic facial features. The emperor holds a cross potent before him. The imperial crown is surmounted by a cross, with pendilia visible at the sides. The legend ΘΕΟΦΙΛΟC is distributed around the bust in the field, accompanied by a six-pointed star to the left and a cross to the lower left. The flan is irregular and the engraving reflects the characteristic provincial workmanship of the Syracuse mint. |
