Additional information

Mauricius Tiberius inherited a treasury gutted by his predecessor Tiberius II, who had distributed so much gold in donatives and tax relief that the state verged on insolvency. The fiscal strain is directly legible in the coinage: semisses from this reign show measurable inconsistency in fabric and weight across dies, a known production irregularity scholars attribute to fluctuating bullion availability rather than mint negligence.

The reign ended when Phocas led a mutinous Danubian army into Constantinople in November 602, and Mauricius was executed along with five of his sons.
