Additional information

Graccurris was among the earliest Roman foundations in Hispania, established by the general Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus around 179 BC following his campaigns against the Celtiberians — the town's name preserves his own. By the Julio-Claudian period, provincial mints like this one were issuing bronze fractions partly to compensate for chronic shortages of small Roman coinage reaching the interior of the peninsula. Issues under Tiberius from Graccurris are scarce; the mint appears to have struck only briefly during his reign before civic coinage from the region ceased altogether.
