Carthago Nova — modern Cartagena — was one of the most productive municipal mints in Hispania during the Julio-Claudian period, and this semis falls within a series of local bronze issues that flourished under the town's quinquennales, elected magistrates whose names appear prominently in the coin's legend. The mint effectively ceased civic bronze production shortly after Tiberius's death in 37 AD, making this among the last issues from a mint that had been active for nearly a century.
