31 AD is one of the most politically explosive years in the early Principate. This coin was struck under the dual consulship of Tiberius and Lucius Aelius Sejanus — the only year Sejanus held the fasces alongside the emperor — a concession Tiberius almost immediately came to regret. Within months of this issue's minting, Sejanus was arrested, strangled, and his body thrown to a Roman mob. Coins naming him as consul became politically toxic overnight, and many were likely withdrawn or defaced in the damnatio memoriae that followed.
Surviving examples naming Sejanus in the legend are genuinely uncommon for that reason.
