| Obverse lettering | NERO CAESAR AVG IMP TR POT P P (Translation: Nero Caesar Augustus Imperator, Tribunicia Potestas, Pater Patriae. Nero, Caesar, emperor (Augustus), supreme commander (Imperator), tribunician power, father of the country.) |
| Reverse description | A prize table, ornately decorated and supported by two confronting sphinxes or gryphons, is depicted in the central field. Atop the table rests an urn and a victor's wreath, symbols of the Neronian quinquennial games. A round shield leans against one of the table legs, further emphasizing the agonistic character of the type. The reverse commemorates the Certamen Quinquennale, the Greek-style festival instituted by Nero in AD 60, known as the Neronia. The senatorial authorization is indicated by the S C (Senatus Consultum) flanking the design. |
