Carteia, on the Bay of Gibraltar, was the first Roman colonial foundation in Hispania, established in 171 BC for the mixed-blood offspring of Roman soldiers and local women — a legally awkward population that needed its own civic status. By the late Republican period the city was issuing bronze coinage under locally appointed quattuorviri, the four magistrates whose names appear paired on these semisses. Gaius Nucianus and Lucius Atinius served together in that capacity, their tenure falling in the turbulent years immediately following Actium.
RPC I 115 is among the scarcer Carteia bronzes by surviving population.
