Obverse description Sarapis standing facing, draped in long robes, holding a spear vertically in his left hand; a crescent symbol appears in the right field. Phoenician legends flank the deity on either side of the field, identifying the issuing city of Sabratha. The figure is rendered in the Hellenistic tradition characteristic of North African civic bronze coinage of the Augustan period.

Additional information

Sabratha was one of the three cities that gave Tripolitania its name, and its civic coinage under Augustus and Tiberius reflects the municipality's close alignment with Roman authority during a period when local elites were actively advertising their loyalty. The city's bronzes are among the most thinly documented of all African Proconsular issues — SNG Copenhagen records only a handful of specimens — and the attribution to a joint Augustan-Tiberian span largely reflects the difficulty of assigning undated provincial issues with precision rather than any confirmed dual-reign production evidence.
