Philippi held a unique status among Roman colonies: elevated to the rank of colonia after the twin battles of 42 BC, then granted the ius Italicum following Actium, giving it the full legal standing of Italian soil. Local bronze issues like this semis circulated within an economy dominated by veterans settled there by Antony and later by Augustus himself, men who would have recognized the colonial authority behind the coin's issue far more readily than any distant imperial mint.
