| Beschrijving voorzijde | Draped bust of Fortuna facing right, wearing a turreted or mural crown, rendered in low relief characteristic of Hispanic municipal bronze coinage. The portrait occupies the central field with the Latin legend CARTEIA distributed around the periphery. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hand-struck provincial issues of the Augustan period. |

Carteia, situated near modern San Roque at the mouth of the Bay of Gibraltar, was the first Roman colony established in Hispania, founded in 171 BC to legitimize the status of soldiers' sons born to local women. By the Augustan period it retained a degree of civic autonomy sufficient to strike its own bronze coinage, which it did with unusual consistency. The D D notation — decreto decurionum — confirms this piece was issued by local magistrates under authority of the town council, not the imperial mint.
