The seiseno was Catalonia's response to a monetary emergency created by the Reapers' War — the revolt of 1640 in which Catalonia broke from Philip IV and placed itself under French protection. The Principality needed coinage that asserted its own authority, and these copper issues, struck in the name of Louis XIII of France as Count of Barcelona, filled that role for the brief window before French control became an administrative reality rather than a political gesture.
Production spanned only two years before the military and political situation shifted dramatically, keeping total output modest.
