Obverse description Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, featuring a quartered shield with diagonal bands and two crowned lions passant, suspended from crossed keys surmounted by the papal tiara. The legend PIVS IX to the left and PONT. MAX. to the right flanks the central device along the rim. The engraver's initials I.G. appear in the lower left exergue, and the date 1848 is inscribed at the bottom of the field. The design is executed in a bold, high-relief milled style characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century Papal State coinage.
