Obverse description Draped bust of William I (Guglielmo Gonzaga), Duke of Mantua, facing right, wearing a ruffled collar and armour, with curly hair and a short beard rendered in fine relief. The effigy is rendered in a bold late-Renaissance style with considerable sculptural depth. A beaded inner border frames the design. The circular Latin legend reads GVL · D : G · DVX · MAN · III · ET · MON · FE · I, identifying the ruler as William, by the grace of God third Duke of Mantova and first of Monferrato.
